Caterpillar

With over 100 years of engineering experience, Caterpillar is by far one of the oldest forklift brands in the world. Founded by two Americans, who were competitors at the time, Caterpillar started out by manufacturing machinery for farming and agricultural purposes.

By 1890, they invented the first steam tractor, this meant that farmers no longer needed to rely on horses and other animals to pull large equipment, which is why the invention was well received by the general public.

In 1904, the wheels of the steam tractor were replaced with a track to increase efficiency over tough, loose or thick terrain (like mud and clay, for example). Once the machine was seen working, someone remarked that the vehicle moved a bit like a caterpillar, and so the name for the company was born.

Despite feeling the effects of the Great Depression, the company continued to invest in research, products and materials, thus helping it to remain a success even through one of the hardest financial periods in history. This early investment enabled Caterpillar to retain its stability in the market, another reason why it remains to be one of the most popular brands in the material handling industry.

Although they still have a very strong foothold in the warehouse equipment market, they’re now the primary service provider for nearly all of the major railroads and railway networks in North America, giving them sole responsibility over approximately 100,000 miles of rail. Despite this, they still manage to manufacture 180,000 material handling machines worldwide, making it one of the most efficient, successful companies in the industry, even after 131 years.
